Leave Portland behind and head to Newport to embark on a sea life cruise. Depending on the time of year, look for gray whale, harbor porpoise, seal, sea lion, pelican, Bald Eagle, and an abundance of marine birds. If the ocean is calm and safe as you set out, the captain will take you far out to sea, but if the conditions are rough, you’ll go instead to the edge of the jetties at the mouth of the bay, where there’s plenty to see, from sea lions to oyster farms. Disembark and enjoy free time and lunch on your own along the Newport Historic Bayfront. In the afternoon, visit the 93-foot 19th century Yaquina Head Lighthouse, the only existing Oregon lighthouse with the living quarters attached, and the only historic wooden Oregon lighthouse still standing. Drive to Coos Bay, with six hours of coastal stops en route, including Thor’s Well – named after the Norse god of thunder, a mesmerizing must-see sight in Cape Perpetua known as the drainpipe of the Pacific. The well is a hole in the rock that drains water to nowhere. This amazing phenomenon draws photographers and onlookers from all over the world. Stop by Devil’s Churn, a wonderful oceanside site, to experience the raw power of nature and just off of Highway 101 is America’s largest sea cave, Sea Lions Caves, and the only known mainland home of wild Steller sea lions in the world. Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint is located in a cove at the mouth of Cape Creek, featuring a beautiful beach teaming with photographic opportunities and the brightest lighthouse on the Oregon coast. After a boxed lunch en route at one of the stops, enjoy a big buggy sand dune ride in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, located in the Siuslaw National Forest, offering miles of sand to explore – an expanse of beautiful, other-worldly terrain best navigated by buggy. Expand Oregon Coast adventure, starting at Arch Rock, the beginning of the Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor. Stops may include short walks or hikes at a few of the following: Arch Rock, Natural Bridges, Indian Sands, Cape Ferrelo. Enjoy a boxed lunch at one of the stops before heading onward to Cape Blanco Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in the state; quite isolated, it was built in 1870 when it began to warn ships away from the reefs and to provide a position fix for navigators.
