Days 2/3 - Amboseli National Park/Mount Kilimanjaro
Travel to Amboseli National Park located at the foot of Africa’s highest mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro. Although only 150 square miles, this small and fragile ecosystem supports a wide range of mammals and birds. Years ago, this was a favorite locale of such famous writers as Ernest Hemingway and Robert Ruark, and recently has been made famous by noted American naturalist and author, Cynthia Moss, who has one of the longest-running studies on elephants and has immortalized them in her many books and award-winning film Echo of the Elephants. Visit Cynthia at the Amboseli Elephant Research Project where she, or a member of her staff, will discuss their latest research. Minimum of 10 trevelers is required. Your lodge features spectacular views of Mt. Kilimanjaro or the Amboseli plains with its herds of elephant feeding on acacia trees. AMBOSELI SERENA SAFARI LODGE. (B,L,D Daily)
Days 4/5 - Namanga/Arusha/Tarangire National Park
This morning, drive south to Namanga and cross into Tanzania, where you will continue on to Arusha. After lunch, drive to Tarangire National Park, the third largest in Tanzania. See the famous ‘upside-down’ baobab trees, which seem to dwarf the animals that feed beneath them. Huge herds of wildebeest, zebra, elephant, eland and oryx move throughout the park, as well as over 300 bird species. Visit a Maasai homestead for an insight into the customs and lifestyle of this nomadic tribe. Then return to enjoy your luxury tented camp’s elegant furnishings, superior service and campfire hospitality. Your camp’s close proximity to the park allows for a wide range of activities, including nature walks, foot safaris and extended bush trekking with rangers. On a night drive lit by spotlight, you may see the same lion that had been lazing in the sun that day, alert and on the prowl. KIKOTI CAMP. (B,L,D Daily)
Days 6/7 - Ngorongoro Crater
Depart for your drive to the Ngorongoro Crater. En route, stop for lunch within a landscape that is garden fresh and walk to the top of a nearby waterfall and see caves created by elephants. Then continue on your drive to Ngorongoro Crater, a World Heritage site which is an extinct volcano 1,800 feet deep. A microcosm of East African scenery with more then 25,000 larger animals, it’s the best place in Tanzania to see magnificent black-maned lions and black rhinos, which are protected around the clock. On your second day here, descend 2,000 feet to the crater floor of this extinct volcano where elephant lumber through the primeval forest, lion rest in the tall grass and rhino graze. Marvel at the colorful flamingos wading in the soda lake while looking for more than 100 bird species, including ostrich, Crowned Crane, Kori Bustard and White & Abdim Stork.
