Family Safari to Kenya

Days 1/2 - New York/Europe/Nairobi
Board your flight in New York to Kenya. Upon arrival next evening in Nairobi, you are welcomed with a cheerful "jambo" (hello) by your Classic Escapes naturalist guide and escorted to your beautiful hotel at the edge of the city. NAIROBI SAFARI PARK HOTEL. (Meals Aloft)
Day 3 - Nairobi
Combat that jet lag with a full day to enjoy all Nairobi has to offer. Begin with a visit to Daphne Sheldrick's Elephant Orphanage at the edge of Nairobi National Park, which is a nursery and rehab center for infant elephants that have lost their families, as well as rhino and occasionally zebra and other wildlife. Enjoy a visit with the elephants as they're brought by their keepers to the waterhole and saltlick to be fed and socialize. Daphne, or a member of her staff, will be on hand to discuss their habits. For the train enthusiasts, visit the Nairobi Railway Museum. Next stop, the AFEW Giraffe Nature Centre where you may hand-feed the rare Rothschild giraffe. The tallest species of giraffe that can reach 18 feet in height, you can see eye-to-eye with them on the elevated walkway at the center. NAIROBI SAFARI PARK HOTEL. (B,L)
Days 4/5/6 - Sweetwaters Tented Camp
Safari means journey in Swahili and your journey is about to begin. Drive north to Sweetwaters which lies in the heart of the privately owned 22,000-acre Reserve, enjoying magnificent views of the snow-capped peaks of Mt. Kenya. Overlooking a floodlit waterhole, your camp offers an unforgettable chance to watch the parade of wildlife in your own backyard. In addition to your daily game drives, enjoy a camel safari and a chance to plant a tree. Pet the tame black rhino, Morani, whose mother was killed by poachers and he was raised by humans. Visit the 200-acre Chimpanzee sanctuary where chimps are introduced, rehabilitated and taught to fend for themselves in an area similar to their natural living conditions. Experience the excitement of a night game drive in search of nocturnal animals such as aardvark, aardwolf, genet, and lion on the prowl. Return to conversations around the waterhole beneath a canopy of stars. Then it's Lala Salama (peaceful sleep) before retiring to your beautiful tent with its hand-carved wooden furniture, bed and en suite bathroom. SWEETWATERS TENTED CAMP. (B,L,D Daily)
Days 7/8 - Lakes Nakuru & Naivasha
Drive to Lake Nakuru, the shallow lkaline lake that is world-renowned for its huge concentration of flamingos - at times, hundreds of thousands of these exotic birds give the lake a pink shimmering glow. The park boasts a huge variety of animals, including leopard which is often found snoozing on the branches of the magnificent yellow-barked acacias, buffalo, waterbuck, baboon, Rothschild's giraffe, and rhino. Feel Africa beneath your feet on a nature walk to Hell's Gate, famous for its natural hot geysers. Boat on Lake Naivasha, where hippos and waterbirds abound. Walk amidst free-roaming antelope on Crescent Island, which has a no predator's policy. Over 350 bird species have been recorded here, with Thomson's gazelle, waterbuck, monkeys and other wildlife to keep them company. Stay at Loldia House with its beautiful turn-of-the century charm overlooking Lake Naivasha. Horseback riding and fishing are available, and you'll visit the school on Loldia's property where you're welcomed by the children with a song. LOLDIA HOUSE. (B,L,D)
Days 9/10/11 - Maasai Mara Game Reserve
Drive to the Maasai Mara, Kenya's most famous game reserve. Much the setting for the film Out of Africa, its seemingly endless savannah is inhabited by exotic animals including cheetah, elephant, leopard, giraffe, zebra, rhino, hippo and more prides of lion than any other park in Kenya. There are also over 500 resident species of birds. The reserve covers an area of 700 square miles and hosts the annual migration of up to two million wildebeest, thousands of zebra and an escort of carnivores from the Serengeti plains, following the rains and succulent new grass. Exciting optional activities (at additional cost) are available, such as witnessing dawn over the Serengeti from a hot air balloon or flying to Lake Victoria to fish for giant Nile perch. Children up to 12 years of age become a member of the acclaimed Adventurers' Club, while older children join the Young Rangers' Club. The two clubs offer a unique family holiday experience, combining a fascinating 'bush school' with excursions to historical sites, practical conservation work, and cultural and sporting exchanges with local Maasai communities. Your luxury tents are spread along a sweeping bend on the Talek River. As in all of Africa, entertainment nightly is live. Swap stories of the day's adventures, watch colorful Maasai dancers perform, or learn more from the naturalist in residence during a slide presentation on the habitat, flora and fauna of the area, and culture of the local people. Days 12/13 - Nairobi/Europe/New York
Your last glimpse of the legendary Maasai Mara will be from the air as you fly back to Nairobi. A dayroom awaits you at the NAIROBI SAFARI PARK HOTEL. Your journey will have gone full circle as you relax poolside. Toast the end of a great safari at your farewell dinner then bid Kenya kwaheri (farewell) as you are escorted to the airport for your flights home. (B,D)
