Kenya Safaris

Ol Donyo Wuas

Richard Bonham is one of the iconic figures of the African safari scene and his beautiful private lodge, Ol Donyo Wuas, is a classic example of discreet luxury. It lies on the slopes of the Chyulu Hills with magical views towards the snow-dusted peak of Kilimanjaro in the distance. With exclusive access to more than a quarter of a million acres of unspoiled wilderness, it is truly off-the-beaten track. Safaris here are light years away from the standard tourist experience - the concession is private, guests are almost guaranteed not to see another vehicle, and game drives can take place in open-topped landrovers, on foot or horseback.

The lodge consists of seven palatial thatched cottages, two of which are for families, each with a bathroom, fireplace and balcony with panoramic views towards Kilimanjaro. Designed for privacy, each cottage is shielded by natural bush while inside high roofs are thatched with palm. Rich dark wood furnishings combine with Maasai carvings and four poster beds draped with mosquito nets to create a classically comfortable feel.  Dining at Ol Donyo Wuas is as much a social as a culinary event, especially when Richard Bonham is holding court. The splendid dining room table is surrounded by fabulous zebra skin chairs and the food is infinitely delicious. Smoked trout from Mount Kenya, beef Wellington and mango mousse could not be more delicious after a day in the bush.

With no set routines, guests can be as active as they choose. Full days for the energetic include early morning safaris followed by bush breakfasts and a walk back to the lodge for lunch. After a few hours of relaxation, possibly by the swimming pool, the afternoon’s activities merge into the invariably spectacular evening game viewing. Sundowners in a beautiful spot with a mesmerizing view, a blissful hot shower, dinner and then bed under billions of stars accompanied by the sounds of the soft, dark night complete the day.
