Kenya Safaris

Kitich Camp

The Matthews Mountains in northern Kenya rise from the surrounding desert as an isolated, forested oasis. Hidden in the hills on the banks of the Ngeng River is Kitich, one of the most remote safari camps in East Africa. A traditional establishment owned by Guilio Bertolli, the Italian who loved it so much that he never left! Kitich has six comfortable tents with bucket showers and long- drop loos. An Italian twist produces terrific cooking and generous supplies of the finest Chianti, as well as an unmistakably European flavour to the décor.

As there are no roads, safaris are on foot. A typical day in this cool and blissfully mosquito-free setting could include a morning’s walking safari, a swim in the natural pool, picnic lunch in the forest and a relaxing afternoon before checking the leopard bait tree. The Ngeng valley is a refuge for elephant, lion, leopard, forest hog and buffalo; the forest is a haven for birds, butterflies and flowers. No wonder Kitich means ‘happiness’ in the local language.
