Children's Rainforest
In 1987, a group of Swedish school children sent money to Monteverde, Costa Rica to purchase rainforest, and started a worldwide effort to protect its priceless natural treasures forever. Since then, children from 44 nations have helped the Monteverde Conservation League (MCL) purchase 54,000 acres, making it the largest private reserve in Costa Rica. It has been named El Bosque Eterno de los Ninos (BEN), or The Children’s Eternal Rainforest, in honor of the children whose contributions preserved this expanse of forest and its rich biodiversity of flora and fauna for future generations.
There still is a need to add protected land to the BEN. Corridors need to be created so species can migrate down from the mountaintops in the BEN to the few remaining patches of forest below to find food at other seasons. So in 2002 the Monteverde Conservation League U.S., Inc (MCLUS) was founded to help raise money for additional land purchase, more guards, and environmental education.
