World Explorer Adventure to
Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a photographer’s dream. Capture the natural beauty of its volcanoes, skywalks, waterways, rainforests and endless stretches of beach with expert naturalists by your side. With its abundance of reefs, concern for conservation and truly incredible birdlife and amphibians, Costa Rica is fast becoming the favored destination for those travelers with less time, but a love of nature.
Day 1 - Miami/San Jose
Fly from Miami to San Jose, where upon arrival, you are escorted to your beautiful hotel set on a 30-acre coffee plantation, capturing the elegance of a 16th century colonial hacienda. COSTA RICA MARRIOTT HOTEL. (Meals Aloft)
Day 2 - Poas Volcano
Your photographic adventure begins on an explosive note as you witness the spectacular beauty of Poas Volcano. From the summit and standing on the crater’s rim, your camera will capture the forces that have shaped this region of the planet. Poas has erupted at least 39 times since 1828 and is in a state of nearly continuous mild activity. Most of the eruptions are phreatic (without magma), caused by the interaction of lava and the water in the Crater Lake. Along with its exciting volcanic activity, this national park offers four different habitats in a relatively small area, evidence of Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity. There are 79 bird species in this park including the Resplendent Quetzal. COSTA RICA MARRIOTT HOTEL. (B,L)
Days 3/4 - Rainforest Aerial Tram/Tortuguero National Park
Discover the beauty of the rainforest from a bird’s eye view. Soar through the air on the Rainforest Aerial Tram in a 1,000-acre private reserve of virgin tropical forest that borders the Braulio Carillo National Park and learn about the small ecosystems that have formed at tree-top level. Then, drive through banana plantations and board your speedboat to Tortuguero National Park. As you boat along this system of rivers and man-made channels through one of the richest regions in Costa Rica, watch nature’s circus as spider and howler monkeys frolic in the tree-tops overhead. Spanish for turtle, ‘Tortuguero’ is the most important nesting site in the entire western half of the Caribbean for the green turtle – which gathers in large numbers to nest between July and October. Your accommodations for the next two nights is ideally situated within Tortuguero National Park, the perfect place from which to explore this unique and magical area. Each bungalow is almost completely surrounded by windows enabling you to be one with the surrounding forest and wildlife. EVERGREEN JUNGLE LODGE. (B,L,D Daily)
Day 5 - Jaco
Fly to San Jose, than drive to Jaco and the fabulous Villa Caletas. From its vantage point up on a jungle hilltop, you will be able to take photographs of the beautiful coastline. From each side of the mountain, rainforests spread to the quiet, sandy beaches below. The dark, emerald green of this wild, native vegetation contrasts with the blues of the Pacific Ocean. Views of lush tropical rainforests complement some of the most breathtaking sunsets you will witness. At the bottom of the mountain, Villa Caletas offers it own private beach, and at the top, its own incredible pool. Renowned for the flocks of colorful Scarlet Macaws, the region is preferred among nature enthusiasts and is the host of several biological reserves and wildlife refuges. Your charming Italian-villa style hotel combines the truly unique concept of both mountain and seaside resort. VILLA CALETAS. (B)
Day 6 - Carara Biological Reserve/Jaco
A full day to explore the Carara Biological Reserve, home to several ecosystems such as marshland, a lagoon with gallery, secondary and primary forests. The lush green vegetation of the reserve contrasts vividly with the dry, barren hills that surround it from which crystal clear rivers flow. Crocodiles and caimans are easily spotted along with plenty of wading birds – Roseate Spoonbills, Anhingas, Jacanas and Bare-throated Tiger-Heron. As you hike along the trails, you may have a chance to capture on film white-face capuchin, howler and spider monkeys and the rare two-toed sloth along with a great variety of plant life including brilliant heliconias. Carara is one of the few nesting areas remaining for the Scarlet Macaw. Throughout the day, the macaws can always be heard and often seen in flight, particularly around dusk. VILLA CALETAS. (B)
Days 7/8/9 - Sierpe/Corcovado National Park
Drive to Quepos and fly to Palmar Sur. Continue by road to Sierpe and the river. Board your boat for the transfer to Corcovado National Park, your home for the next three nights. As you glide along the river, photograph the amazing flora and fauna surrounding you. Towering mangrove trees line its banks and tributaries as it meanders its way out to the Pacific Ocean. Once you pass the river mouth you’ll behold some of the most picturesque places in the country like Drake Bay and Marenco Biological Reserve. Your accommodations are nestled in a 70-acre private reserve bordering Corcovado National Park. The vegetation of Corcovado is one of the richest and most varied in the country. There are 500 species of trees throughout the park, which constitutes one-fourth of all the tree species in Costa Rica. The true giants of the forest grow between 130 and 165 feet high. The park protects several endangered species and is home to 140 species of mammals, over 360 species of birds, over 100 species of reptiles and amphibians and all sorts of insects. Monkeys, toucans and, although rarely seen, tapirs, jaguars and boa constrictors are all residents of this forest reserve. Although Costa Rica is best known for its incredible biologically rich rainforests, its waters are equally rich and you may see dolphins and whales. On one of your days here, enjoy a boat excursion to Cano Island Biological Reserve, believed to be the burial ground of the Diquis Indian’s ruling elite. Cano Island features pre-Columbian stone spheres. The most common sighting on the excursion is the Pan Tropical Spotted Dolphin, Bottlenose Dolphins and Humpback Whales. Stroll along the pristine beach and then refresh yourself under a waterfall. CORCOVADO JUNGLE LODGE. (B,L,D Daily)
