The Spanish Called Them the Enchanted Islands. Some Believed That They Did Not Exist…
Privateers took refuge among them. Herman Melville wrote of them. But the Galapagos Islands are forever associated in the public mind with Charles Darwin, and his meeting with the marvelous endemic species that sparked his great theory. It is the chance to walk in Darwin’s footsteps, to see the great namesake tortoises, rugged iguanas, and of course the legendary finches, that has made the Galapagos among the most sought-after ecotourism destinations on the planet.
Celebrate Darwin’s bicentenary and the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species with the trip to the Galapagos you’ve always dreamed of! The marine iguana, endemic to the Galapagos Islands, is the only lizard that is able to forage in the sea. Early travelers found them disconcerting; Darwin himself described them as “most disgusting clumsy Lizards” and “imps of darkness.” However, they are entirely vegetarian and aggressive only in the breeding season or when vulnerable due to cold.
