Be an integral part of conservation in action as you travel to Rwanda and Tanzania. Meet Research staff and founders who have dedicated their lives to preservation and conservation of wildlife and places. Trek for gorillasin Parc National des Volcans, the base for Dian Fossey's work at the Karisoke Research Center, and other primates at Nyungwe Forest. Visit Lake Eyasi and the hunter-gatherer bushmen to learn about their way of life. Experience some of the most superb wildlife viewing in the Serengeti. Visit Lake Victoria, and at Mkomazi Nature Reserve on the Kenyan border, spend four days learning side-by-side with renowned conservationist Tony Fitzjohn the work being done at the rhino sanctuary and captive breeding and translocation program for African hunting dogs.
Days 1/2 - New York/London/En Route
Depart New york on your overnight flight to London. Upon arrival the next morning, proceed to your day-room at the airport Hilton Hotel. This evening return to the airport for your overnight flight to Nairobi via Kenya Airways. (Meals Aloft)
Days 3/4 - Nairobi/Kigali/Nyungwe/National Park
This morning you land in Nairobi and connect to your short flight to Kigali, Rwanda, where you will be welcomed by your guide George Mavroudis and escorted to your stylish hotel. The next morning, board your private helicopter for a flying safari to Nyungwe Forest, a newly gazetted national park comprising the largest remaining single tract of montane forest in east and central Africa. Nyungwe's biodiversity is astonishing and is one of the most endemic species-rich areas in all of Africa. Enjoy a spectacular aerial tour of the forest and surrounding tea plantations, then land at park headquarters for a walking safari into the forest to trek for the many primates to be found here. Day 5 - Parc National Des Volcans
Board your private helicopter for a short ride over spectacular mountain scenery to Ruhengeri, the base town for gorilla tracking. From here proceed to the Parc National Des Volcans Headquarters. Home to five extinct volcanoes, this park was the base for Dian Fossey and her work at the Karisoke Research Center for 18 years. Local guides and porter will carry your personal items and assist you on your trek up the slopes of these ancient volcanoes to see the mountain gorillas. Your group will have the opportunity for two treks per person to view these gentle giants. Your newly opened lodge has stunning views of the volcanoes and the beautiful valley and hills beyond. Day 6 - Parc National Des Volcans/ Kigali
Early morning trek to visit a new gorilla family. Return to the lodge in time for lunch before transferring back to Ruhengeri for your flight back to Kigali via helicopter. INTERCONTINENTAL KIGALI HOTEL. (B,L,D)
Days 7/8/9/10 - Serengeti National Park
Enjoy a morning city tour of Kigali including the Genocide Museum, and after lunch transfer to the airport and board your private plane for a short ride to Tanzania's Serengeti National Park. Get set for four days of exciting wildlife viewing in vehicles and on nature walks across the vast plains, which are home to millions of animals. Referred to by the Maasai as Siringitu - "the place where the land moves on forever," in the Serengeti life's possibilities seem as infinite as the endless variety of wildlife you will see such as lion, leopard, and cheetah, and their prey - giraffe, topi, buffalo and impala. The kopjes (prehistoric rock outcroppings) host hyrax, dwarf mongoose, and often a sleepy black-maned lion or leopard. This is also the setting of the annual migration of more than a million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and other herbivores, in search of fertile grasslands. Days 11/12 - Lukuba Island
Your private charter now takes you to Musoma, where you will board your baot to Lukuba Island Lodge, situated on a tiny private island in Lake Victoria, the source of the Nile River and the second largest freshwater lake in the world. Spend the next two days exploring this picturesque island and its surroundings. Fish for giant Nile Perch, and visit local fishing villages for a glimpse into their traditional way of life. Enjoy canoeing, boating and hiking. Your stone bungalows have traditional hatched roofs, all with lake views. Days 13/14/15 - Lake Eyasi
Fly to Lake Eyasi, a mildly alkaline lake situated southwest of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The meadows along the shores of the lake and the forests are home to a wide variety of animals including leopard, hippo, monkeys and birds such as greater and lesser flamingos, storks and pelicans. However, the main attraction of the region is its people. Lake Eyasi is home to some of the last remaining hunter-gatherers - the Hadzape and the Mangati. You are priviledged to accompany hunters when they hunt bush meat, learn to make jewelry with the women, watch the production of traditional weapons and intruments and learn the Hadzape's click language. The communities directly benefit from your visit, as well. Your traditional tented camp is situated in a palm and acacia lakeshore forest with beautiful views of the lake. KISIMI NGEDA TENTED CAMP. Days 16/17/18 - Mkomazi Nature Reserve
By private plane fly to Mkomazi Game Reserve, where you will be met by renowned conservationist Tony Flitzjohn, your host during your stay. Mkomazi encompasses over 1,200 square miles in northeast Tanzania and lies between Mt. Kilimanjaro and the Indian Ocean. Fitzjohn's vision for Mkomazi is the legacy of his friendship and work with George Adamson known through the book and film Born Free. Tony worked alongside George for 18 years managing Kora National Park and rehabilitation programs for lion and leopard. When the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust began the rehabilitation of Mkomazi in 1990, the region had been decimated by invasions from livestock, poaching, indiscriminate hunting and uncontrollable fires. Since then, there has been a remarkable recovery in the numbers and variety of wildlife. The trust founded and manages a 30-square-mile rhino sanctuary, home to a founder population of eight rhinos and the first of its kind in Tanzania. Days 19/20 - Arusha/London/New York
Transfer to the airstrip for your flight back to Arusha. Board your overnight flight to London and home. (B,L,D; Meals Aloft)
