Classic Safari

Zambia

Follow the footsteps of Livingstone and experience the verdant beauty of Zambia as you feel Africa beneath your feet on a walking safari in South Luangwa, or a canoe trip on the Lower Zambezi.  This is unspoiled and less explored Africa, where animals are shy and the sense of adventure heightened.  Then, rinse off that safari dust and witness the splendor of Victoria Falls – more than twice the size of Niagara Falls.

Day 1 - Washington or New York/Johannesburg
Board your South African Airways overnight flight from Washington or New York to Johannesburg.  Upon arrival the next morning, you are escorted to your elegant hotel.  Relax poolside or enjoy tea in the Edwardian library, and a Welcome Dinner at the hotel’s trendy restaurant.  GRACE HOTEL. (Meals Aloft, D)

Days 3/4 - Lusaka/South Luangwa National Park
Return to the airport and fly to Lusaka, Zambia’s capital city.  Connect with your flight to Mfuwe and the Luangwa Valley, one of Africa’s prime wildlife sanctuaries.  Nestling at the tail end of the Great Rift Valley, South Luangwa National Park is wild and remote.  It has an abundance of wildlife that is rarely seen in other parks and some sub-species of animals found only in this valley, such as the Thornicroft’s giraffe and Cookson’s wildebeest.  Even the zebras are a sub-species of Burchell’s, and lack the muddy-brown shadow stripe. Here you find 14 species of antelopes and one of the densest populations of leopard in Southern Africa.  Lions are plentiful and often roam in prides of up to 30.  The winding Luangwa River is filled with hippos, crocodiles and wading waterfowl.  During the next two days discover the glorious fauna on your daily game drives. Your beautiful lodge is situated on one of the many oxbow lagoons close to the park entrance and was founded by the late Norman Carr, a pioneer of walking safaris and renowned conservationist.  KAPANI LODGE. (All Meals Daily)

Days 5/6 - South Luangwa National Park/Walking Safari/Mobile Camps
In this park, walking safaris were initiated, and now you get a chance to experience Africa from a different perspective – on foot, on the same level as the animals you came to see.  Drive to the remote Nsolo Bushcamp and after brunch, embark on your first nature walk.  This is your chance to learn and absorb the beauty of Africa step-by-step.  The next morning you embark on foot and your journey will bring you down the course of the Luwi River to its confluence with the main Luangwa. Here, perched on a ridge above the two rivers, you will find the Kakuli Bushcamp with a delicious brunch waiting for you.  The area is remote with wild, the terrain and habitats varied, and the game shy and unused to humans.  From ants to buffalo, a bird’s nest to tracking a lion, you will learn the many facets of the bush on walking safaris and game drives.  Both nights will feature accommodations in your fully-serviced mobile camp.  You will be pleasantly surprised at the level of comfort you will find as each walk-in tent is well equipped with full bedding.  The shower is hot, the facilities are en suite but open to the sky, and the meals are of the highest standard served in the small dining lounge or al fresco under the stars.  MOBILE CAMP.  (All Meals Daily)

Days 7/8/9 - Lower Zambezi National Park
A final wildlife drive through the park ends at the Mfuwe airport where you board your flight to the Jeki airstrip in the Lower Zambezi Valley.  Between the rolling hills of the hazy escarpment and the Zambezi River, it is sprinkled with reed islands, which are home and feeding ground for many animals.  These waters are a focal point for elephant, hippo, buffalo, zebra, lion, leopard, various antelope species, and baboon and vervet monkey, together with a great variety of birds.  Here you also find African wild dogs, and Kellie Leigh, an Australian researcher, who has been studying them for years. Kellie will join you in camp to give you insights on these highly endangered carnivores.  The area lends itself to game viewing trips by vehicle, boat or canoe.  Your beautiful tented camp rests peacefully on the river bank in a grove of mahogany and acacia on a raised timber deck with private verandah.  Chiawa Camp has undertaken two unusual wildlife projects, reintroducing wild cheetah and Ground Hornbill into the Park and supports Kellie with her work on wild dogs.  Your visit is not only an investment in yourself, but a contribution to a secure future for the Zambezi Valley’s bountiful yet vulnerable wildlife.  CHIAWA CAMP. (All Meals Daily)

Days 10/11 - Victoria Falls, Zambia
Back to the Jeki airstrip for your flight to Livingstone, located on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls.  At more than twice the size of Niagara Falls, it’s no surprise that Victoria Falls is among the Seven Wonders of the World.  Five separate falls make up this incredible spectacle that plunges more than 325 feet into a sheer-sided chasm which separates Zimbabwe from Zambia.  Tour the falls on the Zambian side.  Visit Simonga, a native village to see how the local people live.  Enjoy a sundowner cruise on the Zambezi River and toast this awe-inspiring land and river.  Savor the genteel elegance of the River Club.  Each thatch-roofed chalet is furnished in turn-of-the-century British décor and completely open along the length with river views.  RIVER CLUB (All Meals Daily)

Days 12/13 - Livingstone/Johannesburg/Washington or New York
Enjoy a morning at leisure before flying back to Johannesburg and connecting with your overnight flight home.  (B, Meals Aloft)
